A legal document directing how your assets are distributed after death.
A will states who inherits your assets and, crucially, names guardians for minor children. Without one, state law decides who receives your property, which may not match your wishes. A will still passes through probate, and beneficiary designations on accounts override it, so it works alongside — not instead of — those designations.
Naming a guardian for young children is one of the most important reasons to have a will.
