When is the FBAR due, and is there an extension?

Answer

The FBAR is due April 15, the same day as your federal income tax return — but you get an automatic extension to October 15 with no form to file. You don't need to request it; FinCEN grants the extension to everyone automatically, so if you miss April 15 you have until October 15 without penalty. That said, don't treat October as your default — file with your return so you don't forget. The FBAR is filed electronically through FinCEN's BSA E-Filing system, separately from your 1040, and it's free to file yourself. Form 8938, by contrast, follows your tax return's deadline and any extension you actually request. Keep records of your accounts' maximum balances and year-end exchange rates so filing is quick. If you're already extending your tax return, your FBAR window lines up neatly with it.
