LearnFAQBudgeting & Emergency Fund

What kinds of expenses actually justify dipping into emergency savings?

Answer

An emergency is something urgent, necessary, and unexpected. Job loss or a big income drop qualifies, as do a medical or dental emergency, a critical car repair you need to get to work, an essential home repair like a failed furnace or leaking roof, an unplanned travel need for a family crisis, or an insurance deductible after an accident. What does not qualify: a vacation, holiday gifts, a planned car replacement, a tax bill you knew was coming, or a great sale. Those are predictable and belong in sinking funds you save toward on purpose. The test is whether skipping the expense would cause real harm and whether you genuinely could not have seen it coming. If you find yourself rationalizing, it is probably a want, not an emergency.
