Should I invest in crypto, and if so how much?

Answer

Crypto is highly speculative and extremely volatile, so if you choose to hold any, treat it as a small, optional slice you could afford to lose entirely – many cautious investors cap it at 1–5% of their portfolio, and zero is a perfectly reasonable answer. Unlike stocks or bonds, cryptocurrencies generate no earnings, dividends, or interest; their price depends entirely on what the next buyer will pay, which is why swings of 50% or more happen. Before any crypto, make sure the foundations are solid: emergency fund funded, high-interest debt paid, and retirement accounts being contributed to with diversified, low-cost funds. Also know the tax treatment – the IRS treats crypto as property, so selling, trading, or spending it triggers capital gains reporting. If you do buy, use money earmarked for speculation, not your retirement or down-payment savings.
