How many credit cards is the ideal number to have?

Answer

There's no magic number, and the count itself barely matters to your score — what matters is how you manage what you have. Many people do well with two to four cards: enough to keep utilization low across multiple limits, earn varied rewards, and have a backup, but not so many that you lose track of due dates. More total available credit can actually help your utilization ratio, as long as you don't run up balances. The downsides of too many cards are practical, not scoring: missed payments, annual fees, and the temptation to overspend. Don't open cards just to pad the number, and don't close old ones impulsively since that can shorten your history and shrink your available credit. The right number is however many you can pay in full, on time, every month without stress. Quality of management beats quantity.
