Does a single person with no kids need life insurance?

Answer

Usually not much, but there are real exceptions. If you're single, debt-free, and nobody depends on your income, the case for life insurance is weak — your debts die with you, and federal student loans are discharged at death. But consider coverage if you have private student loans or other debt with a co-signer (your parent could be left on the hook), if you financially support a parent or sibling, or if you want to lock in low premiums and insurability now in case your health changes before you have a family. A small policy through work is often enough for final expenses. The honest answer for most healthy single people without dependents: skip the big policy and put that money toward investing and an emergency fund instead at wealthserene.com/tools/emergency-fund.
