Do my Roth IRA and Roth 401(k) have required minimum distributions?
Roth IRAs have never required distributions during the original owner's lifetime – that's a major advantage, letting the money grow tax-free for as long as you live and pass to heirs. As of 2024, thanks to SECURE 2.0, Roth 401(k)s and Roth 403(b)s also no longer have lifetime RMDs, eliminating the old workaround of rolling a Roth 401(k) into a Roth IRA just to dodge them. Traditional accounts still require RMDs starting at age 73. This RMD-free status is one reason Roth accounts are so valuable late in retirement and for estate planning: you're never forced to withdraw and pay no tax on growth. Inherited Roth accounts do generally have to be emptied within ten years, though usually still tax-free. Confirm rules with your specific plan administrator.
