Do buy-now-pay-later loans from Affirm or Klarna show up on my credit report?

Answer

Increasingly, yes, but it's inconsistent. Historically most buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) loans didn't report to the bureaus, so they neither built nor hurt your credit. That's changing. Affirm reports some longer-term loans, and Experian and TransUnion have built ways to capture BNPL data. In 2025 the industry moved toward more consistent reporting.

The risk is that a pile of small BNPL loans can quietly become a real debt load and, once reported, can drag your score if you miss the biweekly payments. The CFPB has warned that BNPL users often juggle multiple loans at once. Treat each 'pay in 4' plan as real debt: track the due dates, don't stack more than you can cover, and never use it to buy things you couldn't otherwise afford.
