Can I claim both the Child Tax Credit and the child care credit for the same kid?

Answer

Yes, they cover different things, so you can claim both for the same child. The Child Tax Credit is based simply on having a qualifying dependent under 17. The Child and Dependent Care Credit reimburses part of what you paid for care, like daycare or after-school programs, so you (and your spouse if married) could work or look for work. To claim the care credit you need earned income and the care provider's tax ID. If your employer offers a dependent-care FSA, coordinate the two, because the same dollars cannot be double-counted; the IRS reduces the care credit by amounts already run through the FSA. Together they can meaningfully lower a working family's tax bill.
