As a newcomer, should I freeze my credit right after I get my SSN?

Answer

It's a smart, free protective step. A security freeze at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion blocks new lenders from pulling your file, which stops someone from opening fraudulent accounts in your brand-new name, a common target since newcomers rarely monitor their files. Freezing is free to place and lift, and doesn't hurt your score. When you're ready to apply for your own secured card or loan, you temporarily lift the freeze, then refreeze. Also set up free credit monitoring or fraud alerts. Because your SSN is fresh and valuable to thieves, locking it down early prevents a painful cleanup later. The CFPB explains freezes and fraud alerts at consumerfinance.gov.
