Are my healthcare directive and living will valid if I travel to another state?

Answer

Advance directives are governed by state law, and while most states will give effect to a directive validly executed in another state, the details can differ and some hospitals hesitate with out-of-state forms. If you split time between states, own a second home elsewhere, or travel frequently, it's wise to have documents that meet the requirements of each state you spend significant time in. At minimum, carry a copy when you travel and make sure your healthcare agent has access. Keeping your directive on file with your regular physician and giving copies to family reduces friction in an emergency. When you move permanently, redo your directive under your new state's law to avoid any question of validity.
